Back to Back Grandparents

We're really glad to have Grandma Joy here while Ellie is on her first business trip since returning to work.

Emerson is maintaining his daily hug quota.

Ceiling-fan gazing with G-pa

We had a great visit from G-ma Mykael and G-pa John this weekend.

Here at the Berkeley house, Emerson and G-Pa John contemplate the mysteries of the universe...and ceiling fans.

And Emerson makes friends with a barking puppet dog found in one of the closets of the Berkeley house. Thanks for a great visit!

It's nice to have a third driver in the family

Though he keeps leaving tooth-marks on the steering wheel.

Cutest goiter ever

We walked to our favorite local pizza restaurant on Saturday in the rain, so Eric got Emerson appropriately situated. One pizza patron commented on seeing them: "Why that's the cutest goiter I've ever seen!"

I'm happy not to have seen the competition.

Happy lumberjack

Standing up on the ottoman (and everything else) is pretty old hat now, so Emerson mostly focuses on banging his hands and trying to balance. It often works, except when the ceiling fan catches his eye at the same time, and then it doesn't.

Past and future Brunonians

That's Jamaica on the right - responsible for the cutest little Brown t-shirt ever. Thanks Jamaica! Next time we will do a better job of actually getting you in the picture.

At Tennessee Beach

Walking (kind of)
Being carried
Contemplating eternity (while not shoving fistfuls of sand in his mouth)

PS Yes that's me - I chopped off my hair!

Seven months old

Since he was born, my mother has been telling me: "One day you'll walk into his room and he'll be standing up in his crib."

Yep.

Huge thank you to my aunt Barbara and Jenny, Fred, Sarah-Louise, Will and Hunter who gave us this crib. Emerson loves it and sleeps very well in it. What a gift!

First pirate impression

A major baby milestone: Emerson does his first impression of a pirate.

Just a little white whale on the go

Emerson has made some leaps and bounds this week in the world of, well, leaps and bounds.

For starters, he is now sitting up with no hands. This is important because it enables him to put things in his mouth while sitting.

For a few weeks now he has been "crawling" and now I feel we can confidently take the quotation marks away (though this video is from right before we were ready to take away the quotations marks). Here Emerson hustles across the kitchen floor in order to make out with a paper grocery bag he apparently feels strongly about.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Emerson has gone straight to pulling himself up to standing and climbing up everything in sight. I haven't managed to capture this on film yet because he kind of needs a spotter while working on his new tricks.
I think he'll be riding a bike by November.

Solid food, take two(ish)

We're easing our way into solid foods over here. And having some good fun along the way.

Emerson and the encounter with the oatmeal

At first - open-minded and open-mouthed:
Then - who are you people and what are you trying to do to me.
This may take a little getting used to.

Baby crocs

Thanks to Mykael for finding this teeny version of the adult shoe that has swept the nation (world?). Emerson wore them well!

Was this an inside joke? Who knew that a spinning a top could be so funny.

No sock is safe (or dry)

Emerson's got quite a few new tricks these days. He's getting up on his hands and knees and rocking - his best chance at forward locomotion so far. Crawling feels terrifyingly imminent (let the child-proofing begin!).

Getting his toes into his mouth also seems to be a favorite of his not to mention a crowd-pleaser. This results is a lot of soggy socks, on his feet and otherwise.

We tried out the new high chair (thank you Joy and Dan!) in anticipation of getting the all clear to try out some solid food. Emerson is clearly eager to be eating something other than breastmilk. (Yes, that's a sock.)

On the Russian River

Here's Emerson enjoying a weekend getaway to hang out with friends in a big house on the Russian River.

My return to work is prompting this blog to shift to more of a weekly update format as opposed to a daily update format. There may still be some midweek gems to share, and I promise we'll update promptly with any major new developments.

Air bath

Benjamin Franklin used to take air baths:

"I rise early almost every morning and sit in my chamber, without any clothes whatever, half an hour or an hour, according to the season, either reading or writing."

We thought Emerson might enjoy an occasional air bath as well.

One last Michigan picture

I am still holding on to our trip. Here's one last favorite photo from that amazing time.
