A visit from G-Pa!

We enjoyed a wonderful visit with G-Pa who 'popped down' from Chicago while he was on this half of the country. We had a great visit with Bill and Mary Lou, spent time at the playground, watched hockey (after the boys were asleep) and enjoyed a lot of different games around the house. (One game of puzzle piece hide and seek resulted in G-Pa unwittingly taking home a piece, which Emerson had hidden in his suitcase. A clever spot!) It was great fun! Somehow we managed to not get any pictures that he actually appears in, though we are lucky recipients of all of his photographing, including some nice shots below. Come again soon G-Pa!

Lucky star

Emerson is a lucky kid in a lot of ways. One of the ways is that he tends to win things. For example, he won a dinosaur out of the crane machine at Dino World on his very first try, in spite of the fact that those things are impossible.

He continued his winning streak at the horse track with Eric last weekend. They went over just to take a peek Saturday afternoon while Ethan (and I) napped at home.

This was their process: Emerson and Eric would walk over and look at the horses in the paddock before each race and Emerson would pick the winners. (Always #2.)

In one race, #2 - Emerson's choice - was favored at 19-1 but Eric put $5 on it anyway just to humor him. It was an exciting race! #2 was way behind for most of the race but made an astonishing push and ended up finishing 2nd to #5 just by a nose. Eric was in the middle of a speech to Emerson about how sometimes you win and sometimes you lose when an announcement over the loudspeaker declared that horse #5 had been disqualified, so #2 was the winner! Emerson was overjoyed. (So was Eric!)

Getting ready for the next race, Emerson ended up telling a woman standing near them at the paddock that #2 was looking good for this one. The woman apparently thought he had some credibility and she put some money on #2.

When #2 won, she sought out Emerson after the race and gave him a dollar as a thank you.

Hike at Brooker Creek

We went for a "hike" at Brooker Creek today. Ethan rode in the hiking backpack, which delighted him, and Emerson walked (trotted, really) the whole 1.7 miles. A major family milestone, to be sure. We'll go back again soon! Here's where we stopped for lunch. You can see we were all bundled up for the "cold" weather!
